Ford used the
Boss 302 name with the Mustang for the first time in 1969 for tas a performance option to rival the new Chevrolet Camaro. After that, it took several decades for the American carmaker to finally bring back the 302 Boss designation with the
2012 Mustang, giving the market the most performance-oriented Mustang below the Shelby GT500. And while the GT500 is a track-obsessed monster yearning for more power, the Boss 302 is a bit more track-oriented. The car comes with a 5.0-liter V8 engine, producing 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. If you're an automatic guy, you need to look somewhere else for your fix. This is a purebred driver's car. In turn, in the Boss 302, the 0-60 mph (0-97km/h) run takes just 4.2 seconds and the quarter-mile will be finished in 11.72 seconds. Not bad for a car that's more oriented to taking tight corners with impressive speed.
When released, the Boss 302 came with a limited-slip differential or an optional Torsen differential to help improve the handling through corners. Furthermore, Ford also improved the suspension and consequently, the handling of this vehicle. This was made possible thanks to a suspension with higher-rate coil springs, stiffer bushings, and a larger diameter rear stabilizer, and the shock absorbers can be adjusted using a screwdriver. The Boss 302 was also offered with an aero package, which was inspired by the Boss 302R race car. Overall, the Boss 302 is a well thought of a track-oriented car that avid American muscle car fans know how to love & appreciate.
